Reply To: Sexual Harassment or Just Funny?

In that video, I agree that it looked pretty funny and the reporter did look like she was happy-surprised, and not scared-turned off.

However… those kinds of comments are rarely appropriate. Even as “jokes”. I wouldn’t want this guy to be my boss. I wouldn’t want men in my life to have this sense of humor. I’m thinking of all the men who are in a position of authority toward women. Either because he’s their boss, their teacher, their mom’s boyfriend… If someone in a position of authority was telling me “he wants his meat in my mouth” no matter the context, it would make me so uncomfortable. Because then it’s a “joke” so if I tell him “This is inappropriate” I would get a “You don’t have a sense of humor!” back. This is such an easy starting point toward real, ongoing sexual harassment.

Of course, if there’s nothing linking you to that person, you’re in safe environment, you have no relationship of authority with that person, you can take a comment like that, laugh it off and say “gosh that was such bad remark to make, bye bye you loser !”. Or maybe that person is your friend and you enjoy joking like that with each other. But that’s basically consenting to making bad sexual joke, so it’s no harassment.
